Description: This is a wonderful Antique Masonic (Odd Fellow) Cast Iron Gold Good Luck Shaking Hands Eagle on its Top Horseshoe Trivet with Wall Holder - Amazingly well preserved piece There is so much symbolism of good luck in this wonderful masonic collectable. It is made of heavy cast iron in relief. This horseshoe Plaque Trivet is an IOOF trivet … the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. This organization was brought from England to Boston in 1819 and is a group united in Friendship, Love and Truth - the Three Rings Of FLT, as depicted on the trivet. The majority of Horseshoe Plaque Trivets were manufactured from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s, peaking around 1890. I would date this 1870 or 1880 Symbolic elements of this Grand Lodge, Freemasons, Masonic or Fraternal piece include: “Eagle” - This, of course, is a patriotic symbol of the USA, but it also represents great power of a higher nature, balance, dignity, grace, strength and wisdom, a link with the future and creation and an ability to see truth. “All-seeing Eye”, - A universal symbol representing spiritual sight, inner vision, higher knowledge (as on the One Dollar Bill). “Hand Shake” - The Mason places his thumb on the space between the second and third knuckles of the fellow Mason's right hand, while the fellow Mason moves his thumb to the corresponding space on the first Masons hand. The thumb is pressed hard between the second and third knuckles of the hands. The name of this grip is "Tubalcain" of a Master Mason. “Lucky Horseshoe” – This is probably more information than anyone has time for, but I think it’s interesting. The horseshoe is considered very lucky and used to be hung in homes to protect and attract good fortune for the family residing inside. In some cultures, the horseshoe is hung points down, so the luck pours onto you; in others cultures, it is hung points up, so the luck doesn't fall out. Horseshoes are also considered lucky because they’re made by blacksmiths; which is considered a very lucky trade as they work with elemental fire, magical iron as well as the strength and dependability of the horse, blacksmiths were thought to have special powers. Originating in prehistoric times, iron was considered magical because it was able to withstand fire and was much stronger than other metals. A magically protective amulet it has been used as a charm to repel or ward off evil spirits and/or the evil eye. “Seven Stars” (below the all- seeing-eye) - Also add to the good luck. A horseshoe was commonly held in place on a horses hoof by seven iron nails. Since ancient times, the number seven was considered very important. Life was divided into seven ages; a rainbow has seven colors; astrology once held that seven planets made up the universe; there are seven deadly sins; a seventh child was thought to have special powers; there are seven days in a week; the moon changes from one phase to another every seven days; and a long-held belief states that the body goes through a radical change every seven years. Condition: excellent vintage condition. Some of the paint is worn away, but I consider this show of age to be part of it’s charm and interest.
