Description: Northern Italy and Venice by Petrus Bertius printed 1672. Copper engraved map on hand laid paper. Later hand colouring Pieter Bertius (1565- 1629 known as 'Petrus') grew up in Beveren in Flanders and as a young man travelled widely in Europe. He moved to Amsterdam as a refugee religious persecution and attended Leyden University. He was appointed professor of mathematics at Leyden University and became a prolific writer on mathematics, theology and history. He was related by marriage to cartographers Jodocus Hondius and Pieter van de Keere and after 1600 developed an interest in cartography and mapmaking. In 1618 he moved to Paris and became Official Cosmographer to Louis XIII. Philip Cluver (1580 - 1622) was born in Danzig and studied in Leyden and Oxford. He wrote a number of books of historical geography and is considered the founder of this area of study. His books remained in print long after his death. His last, and most important work, 'Introductions in Universam Gerographicam' was a comprehensive historical geography of the world and was first published posthumously in 1624. The book used maps by Petrus Bertius and was re-published many times in following years.
