Description: Antique Creamware Liverpool jug transfer-printed in black, one side depicts a sailor holding the hand of his sweetheart and is pointing to a cherub above with ships in background, below which is inscribed with the lyrics from the song "Poor Jack" by Charles Dibdin.* The reverse depicts a British Navy square rigged 3-mast frigate under full sail, port side view, multiple figures on deck, figurehead at prow, with a total of 18 cannon. The jug measures approximately 7 inches high, 7 inches long (from spout to handle) and sits on a 4.5 inch diameter base. There are a few chips to spout and a star crack on base that does not come through to interior. There is a small chip to image of ship (possibly original imperfection as it appears to be under glaze) and also a repair to glaze on front below the couple. *Charles Dibdin (1745-1814) was one of the most popular English composers of 18th century. In 1788 he began to produce his celebrated one-man "table entertainments" in which he acted as author, singer and accompanist. Most of his sea songs ( "Poor Jack" among them ) were written for these entertainments. Provenance: deaccessioned from the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco. Museum inventory number painted on foot but is not permanent and can be removed. The item(s) are antique and sold as is/as found unless otherwise noted.
