Description: Antique Copeland-Spode Commemorative "Columbus" Pitcher, Columbian Expo, Chicago 1893 World's Fair. This 8" tall porcelain pitcher is in good condition with a few shiny spots that look like glaze on the blue body & one black spot that happened during production, shown in the last two photos. NO chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. It measures 8" high & 8 1/4" wide, including the handle. It weighs 3 pounds & holds 2 quarts. This Jasperware pitcher was made by W.T. Copeland & Sons, successor of Spode, for Burley & Company of Chicago. Impressed on the bottom: England Copeland. Stamped on the bottom in a circle: 1492-1892, "Columbus" Made in England by W.T. Copeland & Sons, Stoke upon Trent for Burley & Co. Chicago. The pitcher was made to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the New World at the Columbian Expo, Chicago 1892-1893 World's Fair. The bas relief scene on each side shows Columbus and his crew making landfall in the West Indies. The intense blue of the jug highlights the white applied decoration to create a stunning effect. It's a beautiful Copeland-Spode pitcher for any Art pottery or Chicago World's Fair collector. Displays well.
