Description: Antique Japanese Chochin Lantern This is an antique Japanese paper lantern called chochin. It is made with thin, brown washi paper with a thin bamboo frame. The lantern compresses flat for easy access to the candle. It is decorated with a floral pattern on the front, possibly a kamon family crest, and a name in black kanji on the back that say "Tonogaito". The unique feature of this piece is that it's meant to be handheld. It is attached to a black bamboo frame that is slightly taller than the opened lantern. The stand features a handle so the lantern can be easily carried around. The bottom of the lantern is torn but still opens fully. Holes in paper. The paper is thin and crispy. Marks, stains, and rust on the metal parts. Wear and tear due to age.
