Description: Description: This is a Japanese lacquerware Suzuribako (or inkstone box) made in late 19th century, i.e., end of Edo or early Meiji period. Its outside is decorated with a dragon vigorously rising into the sky with Taka-Makie (or raised Makie technique). Meanwhile, the inside is decorated with calm grass and insects in autumn wind with common Makie.What a wonderful contrast the two sceneries are!!It is stored in the original wooden box (photo #15 & 16). Some chips are seen on the box with some patina, which are consistent with the age of this tray. The code is brand new. It is in excellent condition as an antique Japanese lacquerware. Some scratches can be seen at the back (photo #14), which is inevitable for antique Suzuribako.
