Description: Presented is a great Irish sterling silver pair of sugar tongs in a scissor-form by William Hughes. This piece has lovely hand chased and hand engraved details throughout. The form is made up of scroll shapes with fluted tong ends. There is a monogram on the inside of the tong ends; PE is engraved on one side, and T on the other side. These tongs are hallmarked with the harp crowned symbol for sterling silver, the Hibernia mark for Dublin, and the maker's mark WH for William Hughes, Dublin and was made about 1773. All marks are located exterior of the finger rings. This harp mark was used from 1786 and earlier. The tongs are in lovely condition. The hinge works great. There are no breaks, no dents, no splits. There are no signs of solder repairs. No problems of any kind. The tongs measure about 5 1/4 inches long and open about 1 1/2 inches.
