Description: Welcome to The Textile Trunk ~ please follow us on Instagram , we are @textiletrunk This wonderful textile was originally used as a duvet cover, it dates from the very early 1800's and is all hand woven! WONDERFUL fine linen ~ Soft, floppy , springy linen heaven! ~The colors are just off from white and indigo blue ~ *~ ~Today, they can still be used as this, simply fill with a feather comforter, OR they make wonderful textiles for pillows, upholstery projects ets as there is a great deal of wonderful fabric. ~ This antique, European duvet cover dates from the late 1800's, look at that hand stitching!! Such a rare treat , very very high quality ~ This textile was constructed using two panels of the hand woven , linen plaid and then hand stitching them together to make this large piece. The back is a natural linen ~ ideal if you are making pillows as there is a front and back fabric, that was meant to be together! ~ This textile has a hand stitched monogram to identify the owner as laundry was washed and dried in public places ~ The texture is wonderful, they just don't get much better than this! ~*~ This textile weight about 3 pounds! High quality linen ~*~ MEASUREMENTS : This textile measures approximately 62 inches long by 60 inches wide ( but of course, it has two layers, a front and a back piece so each measure this ~ a great deal of fabric! ~*~ Condition: I've freshly laundered this gorgeous textile and it's ready to use! This textile has signs of time and use, often inherent in these wonderful antiques. There are pale marks on each side that didn't wash, only pale. the back side has age marks, dark ( please see photographs) that I think would make GORGEOUS pillow backing, giving that wonderful genuine look to your projects ~ Inventory number : Etsy E 80020220719 The word Kelsch is a Germanic word, taken from "Kolnisch Blau", which refers to a plant grown primarily as animal feed, (whose leaves and stems were the sources of an old blue dye) For centuries ( as early as the 7th century) the plant, along with hemp and linen, was the main crop cultivated in eastern France and neighboring Germany. In the 18th century, the word kelsch came to describe the hand-woven linen and hemp cloths made in the French region of Alsace, usually woven by poor rural farmers. These textiles were hand loomed on narrow looms, and seamed together by their selvages to form wider widths for larger textiles. When pillow cover and mattress covers were created using these wonderful fabrics, they were sew together in large or small envelopes with openings for stuffing. These textiles were either stuffed with straw or feathers for use as mattress covers, duvet covers and pillow cases ~*~
