Description: This is a terrific antique wood hand carved Santo Spanish religious saint statue. The word santos is Spanish for saint. The santos figures played a role in the conversion of native people to Christianity. The figures are typically carved from locally available wood and then painted with a vegetable or hand ground mineral dye. Many of the oldest figures have several layers of paint. Some had removable hands which over time became separated from the statue which was not uncommon. I’ve also read that some churches removed the hands, but I have no authority on that. The real old ones date back to the 18th-19th century. The only way to get get the true age is to have the he smithsonian do scientific analysis on the paint layers and wood. This statue measures 16” Tall by 4”x3.5” at base. Numerous layers of paint. Please use the pictures for best identification.
