Description: Alternately named "The Meeting of our Lord." The story of the Presentation is told in Luke 2:22-29. The Virgin Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple forty days after his birth and presented him to the High Priest, Simeon. Simeon had spent much time studying the Prophets of Israel, praying and awaiting many years for the coming of the Messiah to deliver Israel from their physical and spiritual bondage. While Simeon was at prayer one day, he heard the voice of God. God promised Simeon that he would not die until he had beheld the Messiah, Christ. When Simeon saw Jesus, he took the baby in his arms and blessing the Lord and saying, "Lord, now let Your servant go in peace according to Your promise, because my eyes have seen Your salvation which you have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory to your people Israel." Also, present in the Temple was Anna the Prophetess, a widow for many years. Anna was about eighty-four years old and spent her time worshiping, fasting, and praying in the Temple. When she saw Jesus, she praised God and told of him to all faithful Jews who were also awaiting the Messiah. After Jesus was presented in the Temple, the family returned to Galilee to the town of Nazareth, where Jesus grew strong and filled with wisdom before the start of his ministry.
