Description: The Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, presents an Antique Gothic Revival Solid Oak Deeply Carved Chest or Trunk featuring 3 front panels, with the Madonna & Child in the center. Circa: 1900. Made in Belgium. Lift up top features cast metal fastener and 3 matching cast pieces on the lid. Each panel is surrounded by carved Gothic lancets, curved volutes, foliage and, at top, the distinct Gothic pointed arch. Left and right panels feature in-relief tracery, reminiscent of a cathedral window, on which is carved a stylized coat of arms with a single fleur-de-lis. Center panel features Madonna & Child are seated against a gold background; on each side is a single column. Above the two are 5 distinct flowers. Trunk’s left and right corners have been inwardly carved to create enclosures, each housing a 7.5” figure standing on a pillar — a pillar identical to those in the Madonna panel. Side panels have the classic carved Gothic linenfold design. DIMENSIONS: 28”H x 40”W x 19.5”D. INT space=20.5”H x 35.5”W x 16”D. WT=65 lbs. CONDITION: Very good antique condition. Solid and sturdy. Carvings remain in great detail. Colors from 100+ years ago are faded but present. Some splits in the wood. 2 shallow holes. Trunk’s bottom has a plank that appears to have been replaced.
