Description: Stunning antique French coiffe or head dress! This wonderful white bonnet likely dates to the early 19th Century and it is a real authentic beauty! This bonnet may have had a tie laced through the back around the neck, but it has gone missing. The simple construction of this head cover suggests it would have been worn with other headdresses, hats or wraps as it would other wise be a bit plain and have no structure. The fabric that this cap is made of is a lovely, slightly stiff, aged cotton and has wonderful tiny, delicate folds at the back. There are some tiny pale marks speckled on this piece, but it is otherwise in wonderful condition! Bonnets or coiffes as they are called in French (translates to headdress) were important to daily dress of women all over Europe throughout the centuries. In times passed in France and other nations of the world, the hair of women was considered to be the den of demons so it was believed a good, pious woman should cover her hair. The look of the bonnet however, was dictated by style and occasionally by tradition, as in mourning. In some traditions at wedding ceremonies, a woman would be required to tie her bonnet under her chin after the wedding as the couple was leaving the church to symbolize her submission to the conjugal agreement. These traditional European headdresses come in many shapes and sizes some more elegant and others more utilitarian, but they are all unique in their own way! ~*~ ( B12 ) MEASUREMENTS : Laid flat this bonnet measures about 22.5 inches wide. When worn the measurement from the back center of the head to a front corner of the brim would measure about 17 inches~ CONDITION : This bonnet has been freshly laundered, but would need starching to be worn without the brim flapping about.
