Description: This is a well done antique embroidery on silk of an American Eagle with 10-star flags and a five-star shield. E Pluribis Unum is embroidered on a banner located at the bottom below an anchor. It is framed under glass with a newer burl wood frame. The embroidery appears to be cotton yarns on a silk background with gold metallic yarns outlines on the eagle and flags and complete fill-in of the anchor at the bottom. It is in an approximate 22 inch by 28 inch wood frame, which is about 1.5 inches thick. The silk fabric shows discoloration, creases, holes and other signs of age, most notably at edges. The gold thread is faded, but other colors remain vibrant. The embroidery appears unsigned, although I have not viewed it outside of the frame. The subject matter is definitely American, but the piece was likely completed in Asia. Japan was opened for trade in 1854 by Matthew C. Perry, the commodore of the United States Navy following the Convention of Kanagawa. Seaports such as Nagasaki and Yokohama opened to the trades and foreign visitors such as sailors, businessmen and missionaries. These type of embroideries were produced as "cruise souvenir" to meet the demand of these new clients, typically the sailors from Britain and America.
