It should be noted that French cutlers were creating masterpieces going back to the 1700’s that are equal to and sometimes surpass the quality artisanship and craftsmen of the well-known Sheffield cutlers. Antique figural knives are top of the line, and this figural 4 scale Mother of Pearl champagne pattern pocketknife in the shape of a champagne bottle was custom made in limited quantities. Note this knife has 2 edged blades in lieu of the usually encountered 1 edged blade with a small, curved blade that was designed to remove the foil from a champagne bottle, and a corkscrew to remove the cork. This 2-edged blade pocketknife is more functional than a usual 1 sharp edged champagne pattern knife and was intended for a wealthy gentleman of means who would pull this from his pocket in a flourish of Victorian braggadocio, to open a bottle of whiskey / liquor / spirits for his guest(s). It also could have been used by a wine steward in a high-end restaurant as a fancy, apropos tool of the trade. The blades are hand forged, hand ground, hand fitted, with the springs being hand forged and hand tempered. The Master back spring is made from 1/8” stock and creates very strong snap for the 2 5/8” clip blade. The clip blade has most of its original polish with very light sharpening on one side. The tip shows a dark patch of pitting that almost certainly occurred when the Master blade was hard snapped closed on a finger that was holding the knife, which is not at all uncommon. Blood is one of the most corrosive materials known on metal and can leave deep pitting overnight if not cleaned. The back side of the main blade also has this tip pitting, en suite, with small spots of scattered naturally occurring age spots surface pitting that has been wiped of its black coloration, with much of the original polish in the background. The 1 7/8” pen blade shows all the polish on one side with a couple of tiny spots of natural spidering with the reverse side having most of the polish with light surface pitting wiped clean. The 1 1/4” corkscrew has a full tip, and both blades have the same 3/32” back spring, good snap on the pen blade, and a very hard to open corkscrew, with a “thunderous snap” (quote attributed to former Jim Taylor). This knife is unmarked. Most high-end French knives were unmarked, were not exported, and were custom made to order for their domestic market for wealthy, elite aristocrats and Gentlemen of means. The bottle top bolsters resemble the foil on a champagne bottle with cork and wire and is made from German silver with hand line engraving. The bottom and mid bolsters are German silver, all secured with Iron pins. All the mounts show naturally occurring light frosting aging. One of the mid bolsters has light surface scratches that could easily be buffed out, but has been left untouched, as found condition. The clip blade tips could also easily be polished if desired to enhance its appearance. The liners are brass. The Mother of pearl scales have no cracks or chips with iridescence found in pearl before the oceans became polluted and 5 small Iron pins. 3 1/4" tall, closed x 3/4” wide x 3/8” thick. Weight is 1.9 ounces or 55 grams. This unusual clip and pen bladed, high quality antique figural pocketknife champagne pattern is hard to find in pearl and is a desirous knife pattern that has seen light use. Overall, in excellent condition, with the noted exception of the blood pitting on the clip tip, and remains in good, usable condition for its extreme age with lots of eye appeal and displays well closed.
