Description: This is a antique Ethiopian Coptic Christian Scroll which is made of goatskin which has been worked into parchment like material called vellum. The writing is in black and red paint or ink and is written in Ethiopic Ge'ez which is the country's earliest language and which has been referred to as the 'Latin of Ethiopia' and is used today only in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Church. Please see 'Ethiopian Magic Scrolls' by Jacques Mercier and 'The coinage of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somalia' by Dennis Gill for more information. Very sturdy and in excellent although somewhat worn condition from past use by previous owners. This Scroll would be an excellent addition to any Ethiopian Christian collection. This is an amazing antique Ethiopian Scroll which measures 49 inches long by 2.5 inches wide. This scroll has two paintings one of a cross and another of a very complex protection design. Also, when an antique scroll is past down to another person the original owner's name is scratched out or removed from the text and the new owner's name is added, also new prayers pertaining to the new owner are added. This scroll is in great antique condition. I combine shipping on multiple buys so check out my eBay store Mountainamma's Marketplace where I have thousands of items to browse.
