Description: This beautiful etching depicts a marshy, solemn landscape framed by heavy clouds. At the center is a solitary figure in a rowboat framed on one side by an expansive body of water and on the other by thick reeds. A single windmill rests in the background. This piece is signed by the artist in the bottom right corner, although the writing is illegible. The etching technique and subject of this work are reminiscent of 19th century Northern European art, possibly Dutch. Update: Thank you to Carolyn who has helped identify the creator of this piece as Dutch artist Jan Sirks (1885 - 1938). Sirks was a prolific artist whose work is appreciated today for its technical and emotional depth. In addition to landscapes, he often depicted urban and industrial scenes as part of a larger effort to humanize the working class and bring attention to the daily conditions of laborers. Approx. Dimensions:Frame: 12 ¼” (H) x 15 ⅝” (W)Scene: 4 ¾” (H) x 8 ½” (W) Condition: Overall, the etching is in good condition; however, the paper has brown spots which may be due to foxing—age-related oxidation of metal particles left behind during the papermaking process. The frame shows age-appropriate signs of wear-and-tear (some fading and chipping) but remains intact. Please be sure to inspect the photos carefully for more perspective on the current condition.
