This company was accurate even to the measurements. I know of several of these being passed on as the real thing. It is extremely tight even though it was used. Elgin Simonds worked for Gustave Stickley until the late 1890s, when he opened the "Elgin A. Simonds Company" in 1901, in Syracuse NY. This stool dates to about that time. The finish on the top is worn from use, and not abuse. If you decide you want to do something to the top, you should only do the following suggestions, 1st- put a clear Shellac on the top 2nd you could get a colored paste wax, such as a dark oak or walnut. The shellac and the wax are reversible without using a stripper. Shellac can be removed with alcohol and does wear down. If you like the worn top the way it is then you can use a clear wax for a little protection. Never use any of the spray or liquid so called cleaners, they create a molecule and turns black over the years. Cleaning any Antique furniture just use a damp soft cloth and wipe dry.
