The large body of the ink stand has been embellished with fine details reproducing the tortoise's skin and anatomical features. This magnificent antique inkwell is fitted with an impressive hinged hallmarked sterling silver cover reflecting the shape of the tortoise's shell. The surface of the body and shell are embellished with engraved details enhancing the naturalistic components of the reptile. The cover opens to reveal a sunken well and removable glass ink liner, above the contemporary engraved initials 'C.R' and coronet; the coronet indicates the importance of the piece. The interior of the inkstand further incorporates an inset silver receptacle and a stamp box, each bearing secondary hinged covers. These versatile compartments retain the original gilding to the interior.
