Description: A tobacco box made on the 11th month of the 8th year of Anei (1779, Year of the Snake) for a Mr. Sasada. (See the calligraphy in the ninth photo, drawer back) The body is made of zelkova wood, a hard Asian elm known for the beauty of its wood grain and its hard durability. Items made of this (Furniture, shop signs, etc) are generally considered a higher quality than items made with other woods. A nice feature of this is they used one piece of zelkova with a distinctive grain for the front then cut the drawers out of it. The interior of the drawers are paulownia wood. This is a soft wood often used on the interior of drawers due to its light weight. The top has a small brass hibachi - brazier. This would have had ashes from charcoal about 2/3rds of the way to the top and when in use, a small handful of burning charcoal on top of the ashes. (The ashes served as an insulating layer) The bamboo would have contained a pair of metal chopsticks (Hibashi in Japanese) and for guests who didn't bring their own long, slim tobacco pipe (Kiseru), a spare pipe. The bamboo has a cap and a ring around its base where it comes out the top. These are made of a dark hardwood. (We don't know what kind)All the drawer pulls are brass. When this was used, a small handful of charcoal would be burning in the hibachi. The metal chopsticks were used to take a small burning charcoal from the hibachi to light the tobacco in the users pipe. Tobacco would be stored in the drawers. The beautiful calligraphic writing on the back of the bottom drawer gives the date and who it was made for. It came from Kyoto. This is very well preserved for being 245 years old. It's 10 1/8" wide, 6 3/8" deep and 6 1/2" tall It weighs 3 3/4 pounds We have been selling Japanese antiques for 26 years and are shipping from Los AngelesWe have other antique/vintage Japanese items on ebay.
