Description: Antique Early American Folk Art Original Gouache House Portrait Painting/ Architectural Design, c. 1870-1890 This unusual original and highly graphic portrait of an American Victorian period residence is executed in gouache/ tempera on a heavy 1800's paper artist board. It is unknown if this painting is of an existing house, or a design-proposal by an architect for an entryway with an extraordinary porch and whimsical solarium with a cupola. Originally found in Edgewood, New Mexico on the edge of the High Plains, east of Albuquerque, there is some possibility of a Santa Fe or Las Vegas, New Mexico origin. The railroad route servicing these cities allowed fancy millwork and other Eastern architectural products to finally reach the Southwest in this period, resulting in the construction of various styles of Victorian architecture some of which seem a little "over the top." The fresh colors, the use of negative space and challenging perspective in this painting make it particularly compelling. The original frame was badly damaged over-painted late Victorian frame, and the piece was more recently reframed with a vintage hardwood frame and all acid-free matte and backing. This painting is visually exciting and in very good condition. It would make an excellent addition to a collection of American folk art, Southwestern art, or American architectural paintings. Dimensions: 16" tall x 20" wide. Frame: 22-7/8" tall x 28" wide. Condition: Very Good. No tears, scratches, paint loss, or restoration. There is minor discoloration along the top at the upper right corner (see photos). NOTE: This item cannot be shipped to a PO Box.
