Description: Etching by William Henry Wallace depicting the canal at Broad Street in New York City (New Amsterdam) in 1645, according to the title inscribed by the artist. "Port of Broad Street New York 1645" Antique print and frame. This etching print is hand signed and titled by the artist. American painter and etcher W.H. Wallace (William Henry Wallace 1838-1929) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He created landscapes and topographical views and painted or tinted in watercolor. He also made many etchings derived from his drawings. Wallace’s subjects usually depicted early American towns and life with figures performing various tasks. This print is mounted on paper and framed in what appears to be it's original antique frame. Probably circa 1920, just a few years prior to the death of the artist. A rare piece of New York City history. Reprints of this etching are available from the New York Public Library, but signed originals done by the artist are becoming rather rare. There is toning, yellowing and some foxing due to age and the method used to mount the print in the early 1900's, but overall condition is good.
