Description: Antique Chinese Box- Carved Wood & Exotic Lidded Box W/Fenghuang, Dragon & Flaming Pearl Motif This magnificent piece is a wooden box with carved exotic composition is huge. The box has a stunningly ornate motif, with a large carved fenghuang (phoenix), dragon auspicious cloud, and flaming pearl motif in high relief on the top of the piece which continues down the front view of the box. I have seen others however none compare with the skilled carvings on this box, comes from a Deacons estate. The dragon is a very ancient symbol in Chinese culture and is ranked first among mythical beasts. An image of the dragon and another mythical creature, the phoenix, symbolizes the emperor and empress as well as marital bliss. The dragon brings rain and is also known as a symbol of power. Its image appears on the robes of emperors and nobility and on various objects made for ruler. The top outer corners and front are decorated with geometric details. The center top and center front are decorated with a carved empirical city scene with a man kneeling on the top scene. This piece has excellent investment potential, as it is thought by experts around the world and avid collectors. Measurements (approximate): 18" x 9" x 9". Opens and closes as it should. Inside velvety red fabric. Very good antique condition and displays beautifully. Metal has patina in some areas, bottom latch is missing, and as shown in photos age related wear exists on the wood, it is sound and the integrity of this old box has not been compromised by its wear. Drawers open and close as should be along with the 3 upper storage portion lids. The original finish is in very good overall condition however please do view the photos because naturally there is age related wear and we all have different acceptable opinions on our antiques.
