Description: ORIGINAL c1649-1658 'PORTRAIT OF ANDREA ODONI' ETCHING AND ENGRAVING BY CORNELIUS VISSCHER (DUTCH, 1629-1658) AFTER PAINTING BY LORENZO LOTTO (ITALY 1480-1556)This is a wonderful original. This piece has been in my personal collection for quite a few years. I acquired it as part of a collection of old master engravings that I have sold in piece meal over the years. I actually acquired it with another of Visscher's most important engravings, 'The Large Cat' which I sold. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is an excellent rich impression. Sheet measures 12 3/8 x 14 3/8 inches. Based on the measurements of the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art the print measures 12 3/8 x 15 1/16 inches. The top margin is a 1/4 inch and the bottom is trimmed to the plate edge. There is 11/16 inches missing from the side margins but if you look at the other examples it is nothing more than hatching. Early backing paper restoration that is only partially attached. A few small tears and a couple chips to the side edges. A few minor spots as well. Along the bottom edge you can see some remnants of what looks like someone painted the frame that it was in and touched the print. Still a very good example of this scarce original old master print. If you collect Old Masters, check my store for the others I am offering. Cornelis Visscher was one of the city's most celebrated and prolific portrait draftsmen and printmakers. His portraits were ambitious: Visscher frequently worked on a large scale and created highly finished likenesses in black chalk on luxurious vellum. This distinctive, polished approach to portraiture influenced many of Visscher's Haarlem colleagues including Dirk Helmbreker and Cornelis Bega. Visscher was only active as an artist for about a decade. He probably studied with Pieter Soutman, a pupil of Rubens, and in 1649 he made numerous portrait engravings, which Soutman supervised. A year later, Visscher is believed to have set up on his own and several years later, he joined Haarlem's Guild of St. Luke. Although he died in his early thirties, Visscher created nearly two hundred prints and a large number of drawings. Many of these works are portraits, but Visscher did not limit himself to a single genre and produced accomplished animal studies, landscapes, and allegorical scenes based on his own designs or inspired by the work of other artists.
