Description: A beautiful 7" tall antique PINK and WHITE colored butter crock w/ BAR HANDLE original lid. This lid is NOT marked or stenciled BUT it is pictured in books on Red Wing crockery as being a Red Wing made butter crock. This crock was actually found decades ago while digging for OLD bottles in ANACONDA MONTANA. There were several of theses broken and this one was whole and, along with the broken ones were several broken stenciled ones that were stenciled "Lutana -BUTTER- 5 POUNDS NET." The name Lutana, was named after "Luteys" Grocery Store in Butte where the butter was sold as "LUTANA", and the name Lutana is a play on words, the combination of the words "Luteys" and "Montana" = "LUTANA". Condition: Crock is in good rustic condition. It has a few hairline cracks in it, running down vertically from the top of the edge. One is about 3 1/2 inches long and the other is about 4 1/2 inches long. They are both tight and look like they've been there since the crock was made. Otherwise the crock is in about perfect condition. The lid has a few hairlines in it as well, so tight that they can barely be seen or felt. All of this is pretty standard for these old crocks. Overall this crock is in EXCELLENT CLEAN condition. Age: This antique crock was found with several antique bottles, decades ago, in Anaconda, Montana. The bottles were hand blown bottles dating from the late 1800's the the early 1900's. Further research shows that these crocks were used prior to WWI, at the latest. As mentioned above, this was a crock used by Lutey's Grocery Store in Butte, Montana. It was dug up in Anaconda, Montana (along with fragments of several other LUTANA stenciled examples) which is not far from Butte or, for that matter, from Deer Lodge, where the Montana territorial prison has been since the 1870's. There is some speculation about these crocks, and some new information has recently come to light. Very oddly, these butter crocks are common, plentiful, overflowing, in SW Montana, specifically the towns of Deer Lodge, Butte, and Anaconda, Montana. Yet they are RARE to find outside of these areas. The further out you get, the rarer they become. These crocks are not marked in any way though they are pictured, along with the lids, in some of the books on Redwing stoneware, though crocks or lids have any Redwing attributions. It has been suggested by some newly-found information, that these crocks were PRISON MADE, hand thrown, in the late 19-teens, at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, Montana which would explain the common numbers of them being found in this area. The Prison Warden, Frank Conley, very much promoted prison - labor and many Montana work projects were completed with prison labor. ("greatfallstribune.com/multimedia/125newsmakers1/conley.html"). It has been suggested and is possible that some type of agreement was made with the Redwing Stoneware Co., sub contracting and training prison inmates, in the work of pottery, and that these butter crocks were produced at the prison, with prison labor. In turn, the crocks were turned out very cheaply and used profusely by both small and large local merchants to market their butter in, a win-win arrangement. Yet as with many of the other prison commercial ventures, none of these were long lasting as competing companies complained that it was an unfair labor practice and private businesses could not compete with prison labor, unions got involved, and the prison labor trend never really got it's feet on the ground, or off the ground for that matter. Thus the explanation as to why they show up so profusely and exclusively in SW Montana, the immediate area around Deer Lodge outward. Anyway, until some facts can be discovered and documented this is only theory. BUT it would explain why these are so common in the local shops and shows in this area. Not only a nice decorative piece but also a very nice functional antique, you can keep all kinds of different things in these, in the kitchen = utensils, in the pantry = hard candy, and so on.
