TIBET. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ Title: Antique Bronze Standing Crowned Ayutthaya Buddha Fragment. Temple Relic. 16/17th Century. Subtitle: Historically Important Ayutthaya Period Temple Relic, Professionally Mounted on Marble Base Overview: An exceptional Bronze alloy Ayutthaya Crowned Buddha, originating from a temple precinct in the historical province of Ayutthaya in north central Thailand. Artistic objects such as this piece and elements from temples and other structures in the city were lost, pillaged, and destroyed during the process of the devastating war with the Burmese Army in 1767 Ayutthaya's art and culture remains known today as an extensive Archaeological site, that is recognized in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Thailand, and is a time commonly called the 'Ayutthaya' Period in Thai Art History. Description: The fragmented image portrays a Crowned Buddha originally depicted standing in a frontal position, possibly on a small plinth, a symmetrically arranged figure modeled with a somewhat flattened profile, with the right hand raised to shoulder height in the 'Abhaya' mudra, the fearless gesture of reassurance, blessing and protection, while the left hand is placed at his side. The figure is clothed in regal attire, a smooth clinging diaphanous garment which covers both shoulders, secured by a decorative belt. The diaphanous garment itself is simplistic in design, draped over the arms, with the presence of an undergarment which would have been visible at the hem of the outer robe. xxxx Typical of Ayutthaya figures the head is adorned with a 'Mukuta' style crown, surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha', consisting of graduated round-edged sections divided by rings, and which terminate into a tall gem finial. The crown itself is ornamented with projecting flanges at both sides, and incised wire-like designs across the front of the crown. At the back, below the major band is a plate covering the lower part of the head, bearing incised floral patterns. XXX Thinly cast in the lost wax method, the bronze surface has naturally aged to a rich chocolate brown patina, with traces of gold gilding and remnants of black lacquer pigment throughout. The core with in the bronze consist of a tempered sandy-clay mixture, and is vissibly completely in tack. Significance: Typical of Sacred Temple Relics the figure was primarily cast from 'Copper' (90%) and 'Tin' (10%), obtained from the smelting of sacred metals and religious artifact fragments. Several holy minerals were then added in completing the purity of the metal - for instance black mercury from Laos, Nampy Steel from Prasaeng pond in Utaradit province, and the most sacred and important rare mineral was Chaonamngern (Blue Metal) found only in some heavily wooded areas in the mountainous regions of Thailand. In addition, prior to the actual manufacturing of these sacred figures - magic letters and drawings are created according to ancient holy scriptures, established by master Buddhist Monks; along with extensive ceremonial prayer, practiced by the gathering of several temple monks. After production of the Buddha - they are blessed and consecrated through infinte virtues and supreme meditative powers. Origin:xxxxxxxxx Temple District, Ayutthaya Province, north-central Thailand.
