The first edition of this book was published in 1911 by The Book Supply Company. A well-preserved antique 1913 copy of Wright's best-selling western novel, dealing with the reclamation of the California Imperial Valley and the formation of the Salton Sea in 1906 and 1907. The heroine, a foundling rescued from the desert, wins and chooses between several suitors. This book was the basis for Henry King's 1926 film adaptation starring Ronald Colman, Vilma Bánky, and Gary Cooper in his first major motion picture role. Harold Bell Wright (1872-1944) was a best-selling American writer of fiction, essays, and nonfiction. He had a very successful career and is said to have been the first American writer to sell a million copies of a novel and the first to make $1 million from writing fiction. Between 1902 and 1942 Wright wrote 19 books, several stage plays, and many magazine articles. More than 15 movies were made or claimed to be made from Wright's stories, including The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926) and The Shepherd of the Hills (1941).
