Description: Rare work on paper "The Maypole" by American artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris. American 1700s historic Colonial Spring dance scene. Signed JLG Ferris 1892. Professional custom wood frame with archival quality double matting and clear glass done in 2000s. Frame measures 36-1/2" wide x 29" high x 1" deep. Art showing inside inner mat measures 27" wide x 19-5/8" high. Very Good condition overall (details below). Frame is Excellent. From a smoke free home. Details: Vintage/antique mixed media reproduction, possibly a stone lithograph with gouache hand embellishment. Textured brushstrokes are striking in person--touches of white and highlight color that glow under black light. Paper seems to have woven texture. No markings or printing date found, but backside not accessible. Visual inspection noted band of discoloration toward top. Magnifying glass inspection noted two slight depressions/partial punctures in dark background areas; two very tiny pricks; and one area with a hint of a crease. Photographs show reflections in glass.JLG Ferris (August 8, 1863 – March 18, 1930) was an American painter best known for his series of 78 scenes from American history, entitled "The Pageant of a Nation," the largest series of American historical paintings by a single artist. In 1892, Ferris was near 29 yrs. old and had not yet gained popularity.
