Description: ANTIQUE A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Co. Straight Edge Razor As printed on the shaft of the razor, this straight edge razor was branded and sold by A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Co, located in St. Louis. I researched the A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Co. My fairly superficial research indicates that the hardware company was in business beginning in 1843, but started as Rogers, Shapleigh and Company and went through a number of name changes over its history. It appears that the company name was as shown on this razor between 1886 and 1901, suggesting that this razor was sold in this period of time. It is interesting that this razor does not bear the "Diamond Edge" trademark, a fact that suggests that the razor was made early in this period (because of when merchandise started bearing this trademark). Unfortunately, as is shown in several of the photos, the scale (commonly described as the protective cover of the blade) is broken at the pivot point. But, as shown in several other photos, it can be stored such that the defect isn't obvious. So, if your interest in acquiring a straight edge razor is to include one for display, this would work. Similarly, the blade edge is quite sharp. So, if your interest is to actually shave with such a razor, this might work for you. I have priced the item low because I find it difficult to toss anything that has been around over 100 years! I am hopeful someone will see value and find a use. Message me if you wish any additional information. Thanks for your interest.
