Description: A nicely worked oil on canvas, 21" by 29" plus almost 1" wide old frame, the subject an extensive continental European pastoral country landscape with figures on shore and in a small boat, a dog, wading and resting cows, trees and classic buildings, signed at lower right by artist "O. Kirkman" and dated there 1858. The more one studies this the more detail one sees. This antique painting will need restoration and it is well worth the effort to bring it back to displayable condition. There is yellowed varnish, two old amateurishly restored complex tears (one about 4" in length), several other small disturbed areas, a small area of loss below the tiny figures at center, cracks, and lots of grime. As is seen in the center sky, a test cleaning conducted by a previous owner revealed bright blue underneath the varnish and dirt. This would not necessarily need to be relined. Ask for more closeups of the areas in the sky that will need work.
