Antique 19th Century Chinese Blue Canton Boar’s Head Soup Tureen Bowl 12 ½”

Description: Antique 19th C. Chinese Blue Canton Boar’s Head Soup Tureen Bowl 12 ½” Your Purchase Helps Support A Disabled Army Veteran Injured In Iraq Decorated with atmospheric views of historic China, Blue Canton has been a favorite for centuries. Pagodas, bridges, and landscapes appear in finely shaded cobalt blues and often recognized by the blue lattice border surrounding a variety of landscape scenes, most often with pagodas or bridges. The quality of the painting & the depth and brightness of the blue and white varies among pieces, with some having subtle blue toned glaze. This popular Chinese pattern inspired a number of European versions, most notably English stoneware. This is an antique piece from the 19th century (1800’s) A little history... Canton ware was imported from China to the United States beginning in about 1785. It quickly became a popular choice among the well to do classes and something of a minor status symbol. By no means was it considered "fine china". It was the everyday dinner ware of everyday American life. It was the favorite of George and Martha Washington. So much so that the Mt. Vernon gift shop still sells a line of high quality reproductions by Mottahedeh China. Canton ware was utilitarian and it was made to withstand the rigors of everyday life. For this reason and because of its popularity a surprising number of pieces have survived. It is still a highly valuable find, with some rare pieces bringing very high prices. This tureen bowl falls in the "scarce" category (rare, scarce, common). Authentic Canton ware is fairly easy to distinguish. First, it is heavy. This piece is 12.5" long by 8 5/8" wide by 5” tall. Canton ware is so dense that it was often used as ballast in the holds of the ships that transported it. Hence, some refer to it as "ballast ware". Secondly, it is relatively unrefined as porcelain goes. The surfaces tend to be uneven (wavy to the touch) and the edges are often slightly asymmetrical. It will typically have spots of "oatmeal" in the finish (slightly bumpy places in the glaze - usually along an edge) as well as small black spots and bubbles or pinholes in the glaze. Most of these are present to a degree on this piece and on virtually every other known piece. They are not considered flaws. They exist because of the conditions under which the porcelain was made; primarily the fact that it was fired in wood burning kilns, which do not produce the heat needed for a perfect glaze. If you ever see a piece that has none of these issues, it is probably a reproduction. This tureen bowl is in outstanding condition overall with no chips, loss of color, or loss of glaze. There is one discolored craze mark, but considering its age, it has been beautifully maintained. Feel free to ask any questions about this product by contacting us.
