Description: Antique 19th C PA Carved SULPHUR-TYPE INLAY Wood SEWING Document BOX Folk Art #4 It was most likely made in the late 1800s. It was sold to us many years ago as a PA Folk Art Sulphur Inlaid Box, but the we do not feel the inlay is sulphur. It has a small opening where there may have been a lock and key - any hardware is no longer there and there is no key. It is a pretty piece of folk art and a memory of bygone days. It has a stepped base which is nicely made. we are not sure what type of wood the box is made of. It appears to be stained in a darker stain as well as a lighter stain to add to the folksiness of the item. It was then filled in certain areas with white "sulphur like" inlay. It most likely was made as a document box as there are no fittings inside for specific sewing items etc. It has loss to the interior marbled paper that covered the inside of the box. It could be replaced with another paper but we leave all just how we found it. The paper interior is also buckling or wrinkling in areas due to temperature changes and age. Interior is not 100% complete and it is used but overall in good antique condition for the age and use of the item. We leave all as found so as not to disturb the history of the item. There is some surface stain wear and loss as well as minor loss of surface. When you close the box you have to make sure the hardware from top matches with the bottom- just mentioned for accuracy. See all photos for your review and estimation of condition. They tell the best story as each person views with a different eye or lens. Thanks for looking. It measures approx just short of 4 5/8" Tall. It measures approx 11"X8" Wide. See all photos. I have collected a lot of document and or sewing or trinket boxes and will be listing quite a few more- please keep looking. Shipping is $17.95.
