Description: For sale is a very rare plate made in Wuerzburg, Germany between 1775 and 1780. Würzburg in Franconia was founded by Johann Caspar Geyger ( Geiger ) for the prince bishop of Wurzburg and Bamberg Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim . This is one of the rarest of the German makers since they only existed for about 5 years - there are about 150 known pieces made by them. They made hard paste as did all the German makers. The shape of the plate is unique - I don't recall having seen another in this shape by other makers. It has a basket weave design to the paste along the rim broken up by a different relief design with a single hand painted flower on top. The center has a nice floral arrangement as well as smaller single flowers and leaves hand painted on it. Not the most interesting plate in the world but as rare as they come! I have never seen another! The piece is in superb condition with some minor use marks but it is quite warped from the firing process and wobbles big time when put on a flat surface on either side. Shows some of the issues they ran into when trying to make porcelain and is all part of the charm of smaller maker! It is marked with the impressed C G over W mark for Caspar Geyger Wurzburg . The plate is between 0.75 and 1.125 inches tall and has a diameter of between 9.125 and 9.375 inches. 18th century If you like my goodies have a look at my other auctions for a lot more top maker pieces like KPM , Gotha and so on.
