Description: The Ellis family had been involved in the wholesale drug business since the early 1800s. The firm became Charles Ellis Son & Co in 1863. There were two buildings, and one was a laboratory. One of the products was a citrate of magnesia. Records say they ceased operation in 1875, but this bottle is probably 1890s so I am stumped. When I cleaned it, the bottle was full of a burned black substance. A labeled one showed up that stated it was Fine Willow Charcoal. Why? The label said it’s good for “headaches, acid stomach, affections of the stomach and conditions of the bowels”. So, looking at the bottle it stands 5 ½” tall and 2 ¼” in diameter. It should be boldly embossed on the shoulder “CHARLES ELLIS SON & CO PHILA”, but something happened to this one. The Charles Ellis letters are mostly gone. There is a light remnant that tells you they should be there. Was it intentional or accidental? If you look at the neck and heavy rolled lip, you can see it was messy. The glass is uneven, crooked, and full of flaws. But to completely miss the letters on one side is unique. The glass on the bottom is uneven, there are many bubbles and some light hazing and a swirling pattern on one side. The style makes it old, the omission of the embossing makes it exceptional. If you have any of these, you need this mistake in your collection.
