Antique 1878 French M1874 Gras 11mm Rifle St. Etienne T-Back Sword Bayonet ONLY

Scabbard is NOT included. The M1874 bayonet was a conversion of the M1866 Chassepot design that enabled the use of centerfire cartridges. They were produced by Chatellerault, St. Etienne and Tulle. This was made by St. Etienne. These bayonets are marked on the spine with the factory, month and year of production. Overall, this bayonet is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. The brass pommel and steel guard are securely fastened to the tang. The brass has light impact marks, scrapes and the coloring has started to tarnish. The guard has light scrapes and oxidation. The coloring has started to darken. The rivets securely fasten the two (2x) wood grip panels. They also have light oxidation. The grip panels have light compressions and draglines. The wood has darkened with age. Also, both the grips and the rivets have a layer of varnish on them. The T-back spine and sides have light handling marks and oxidation. There are no nicks or dings on the blade edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white, but the coloring has a mixture of darkened patina coloring with the oxidation. The marking on the top of the spine is hard to read. It looks like "Mre d'armes de St. Etienne Fevrier 1878". The right ricasso and right side quillon have proof marks. The left side quillon has more proof marks and serial number "M 46246". This bayonet will be a great addition to your French Gras M1874 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
