Description: Presented is a beautiful Dutch 833 purity silver snuff box made in 1838. This piece is hand engraved with beautiful scrolls and flowers on the top lid. The box has an interesting round thumb grip on the bottom of the box with textured ribbing. The piece could have been used for tobacco or matches. The back-side, under the hinge, appears to have been used as a match-strike at some point. As is common with Dutch silver, the marks are spread throughout the piece. The box is marked with the lion 2nd standard .833 purity silver, the assay Minerva mark with B for Utrecht, the date letter D for 1838, and a maker's mark. The box is in good shape, especially the exterior. Because of the effects that tobacco can have on silver, there are a few breaks and pitting around the box. There are a few pinpoint holes on the back-side below the hinge and in the lion passant purity mark. and There are no monograms and no monogram removals.
