Description: This is an interesting and very old Antique 17th c. Italian Old Master Virtuoso GAMBLER Scholar Portrait Painting, Watercolor on laid Paper, depicting the portrait of a stereotypical Italian virtuoso, which describes someone who is highly educated and talented, who holds a large book in his hands, wears a wide brimmed hat and long cloak, and stands next to three large dice on the floor. I believe that this original artwork is a hand-painted illustration from an old 17th century Italian manuscript, considering that it has the annotation: "P. 3" at the top edge, and: "T. 3" at the lower edge. Additionally, this artwork reads: "(?)ANTE VIRTUOSO" in handwritten ink at the lower edge, right below the painted image. The only comparable artwork I could find to this one, which depicts a stereotypical Italian scholar or virtuoso, is a circa 1700 etching by Giuseppe Maria Mitelli (1634 - 1718,) see photo 24. In his artwork, an omniscient virtuoso gestures boastfully at all the knowledge that lies available to him. This piece likely dates to the mid - late 17th century and was most likely painted by an Italian artist. This piece is unsigned, but perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 10 1/4 x 12 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual visible artwork is approximately 3 x 4 3/4 inches. Very good condition for centuries of age and storage. Acquired in Los Angeles County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
