Description: Although, as we shall see, the Chinese had an elaborate literary tradition, written sources relating to early China are limited. For China, as for many other cultures, the surviving artifacts are important because they are the only evidence we have for some of the preoccupations of Chinese society. Moreover the Chinese, more than any other peoples, exercised their greatest artistic talents in the manufacture of ceramics, bronzes, and jades. They diverted valuable materials and much labour to these ends, and the enduring monuments of the ancient Chi- nese are the fine painted bowls and the intricate ritual bronzes that they made. Indeed the high level of accom- plishment they achieved, and the large scale of produc- tion, are astounding. Unlike many ancient civilisations, the architectural remains are limited. From what still exists, however, it is evident that here, too, large num- bers of men were deployed in monumental tasks. Little graphic art has survived. -From the Introduction
