Description: This incredibly consequential book by acclaimed author of over 40 books, William C. Davis, is about the four months that saw the surrender of the South and the assassination of President Abe Lincoln by Southern partisans. It is also the story of two men, antagonists but political partners, who struggled to achieve their own differing visions: Jefferson Davis, autocratic President of the Confederacy, who vowed never to surrender regardless of the cost, and his Secretary of War, General John C. Breckinridge (who commanded the victorious Confederate army in the May, 1864, Battle of New Market, VA, who hoped pragmatism would save the shattered remnants of the land he so loved. Pulitzer Prize-nominee Wm C. Davis traces the astounding journey of these men, and the entire Confederate cabinet, as they fled Richmond, VA by train, and then by wagon and mules, and finally on foot. Using original research, he narrates, with dramatic style and clear historical accuracy, the futile quarrels of between Davis and Breckinridge, as they continued their flight from their eventual fate. The result is a rich canvas of a time of despair and defeat, a charged tale full of physical adventure and battle that sweeps from the marble halls of Richmond, VA, to a dingy room in a Havana, Cuba, hotel. This book has great maps and illustrations. It's over 495 pages in length and comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home, so there are no odors. If you could have only ONE book on the collapse of the Confederate government, this clearly would have to be it. It's particularly good in its coverage of the CS's Sec. of War, Breckinridge, a Kentuckian and former commander of the Orphan Brigade from KY and before that, served as the Vice President of the United States under James Buchanan. Included with this book is a postcard of the first Confederate White House, not in Richmond, VA, but in Montgomery, Alabama. I highly recommend visiting this home that housed President Davis; great artifacts plus you've got the added bonus of going next-door and visiting the history museum for the state of Alabama- their Confederate flag collection is mind-blowing !!
