Description: An Architectural Rendering by Cyril A. Farey, F.R.I.B.A. A Projected Building An Architectural Rendering by Cyril A. Farey, F.R.I.B.A. A Projected Building On Tower Hill Click images to enlarge Description An Architectural Rendering by Cyril A. Farey, F.R.I.B.A. A Projected Building on Tower Hill Offered here is Cyril Farey's wonderful architectural rendering of a planned building designed by Campbell Jones, Sons and Smithers. It is of particular interest because Farey has chosen to include it in his book Architectural Drawing Perspective & Rendering, along with an extensive description of the drawing's development. For this reason, we believe it is perhaps the most valuable of Farey's drawings. The work is 23" by 18" sight, single matted, and framed to 29.4" by 24.4" . It is signed lower left "Cyril A. Farey 1929". The rendering is on watercolor board which is 100% rag paper mounted to heavy card. This provides a perfectly flat surface for the intricate, detailed rendering. It's a marvelous work. Note the many incidental elements which Farey has added for interest. Because of the thickness of the watercolor board, is has been "nested" in mat board to provide a flat surface for the mat. The mat is actually two mats between which is mounted the gold border accent strip. The condition of the watercolor and mat is very good, excellent for the age. The original Whistler style frame is in very good condition. The work is protected under acrylic. Farey's drawings of this size and larger have auctioned to $12,000 and higher. We are offering it well below that. The price is firm. Returns are accepted only in case of misrepresentation but our guarantee of authenticity is without time limit. Cyril A. Farey, F.R.I.B.A. (1888-1954) A Projected Building on Tower Hill / Campbell Jones, Sons and Smithers, Architects" Pencil and watercolor on textured paper; signed lower left, "Cyril A. Farey / Del. 1929" Sight: 23 x 18" (58.4 x 46cm); Frame: 29.5 x 24.25" (75 x 61.5cm) Biography: Cyril Arthur Farey F.R.I.B.A. (1888–1954) was a British architect and architectural illustrator. Known most widely for his detailed pencil and watercolor perspective depictions of architectural and engineering landmarks in the first half of the 20th century. Born in London in 1888, he was educated at Tonbridge School and served his articles in the offices of architect Horace Field between 1911 and 1913, attending the Architectural Association and the Royal Academy School of Architecture. Winner of the RA Schools Bronze Medal in 1911, Farey subsequently won the Tite Prize in 1913, the Soane Medallion in 1914, and in 1921 both the Edward Stott Travelling Studentship prize and the Royal Academy Gold Medal. He was nominated as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1918 and became a Fellow in 1941. During the First World War he served in the Royal Army Service Corps, attaining the rank of captain. Farey also worked for a period in the offices of Sir Ernest Newton RA, before setting up his own architectural practice. Career He became perhaps the most renowned British architectural draughtsman of the twentieth century, providing commissioned illustrations for numerous leading architects including Edwin Lutyens and Frank Lloyd Wright and was considered along with William Walcot to be one of the preeminent architectural draftsmen of the period. Farey travelled extensively in Europe and was commissioned to provide technical illustrations for both Frank Lloyd Wright's 1923 Tokyo Imperial Hotel and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. [Wikipedia] This painting is featured in Farey's book on architectural drawing: Farey, Cyril A. and A. Trystan Edwards Architectural Drawing Perspective & Rendering, 2nd ed., London: B. T. Batsford Limited, 1949. Note: The original flag was replaced by the burgee, see book illustrations. It seems to show the coat-of-arms of the Port of London Authority, though the Authority's headquarters was near this proposed building at 10 Trinity Square.
