Description: These very fine Victorian meat skewers are an example of pieces of silver which once comprised part of a fine dining service. They are hallmarked for John Samuel Hunt of Hunt & Roskell (who also worked alongside the great Paul Storr), London 1853. Meat skewers of this period are usually found with simple ring terminals, however this example is superbly cast with an armorial finial of a demi-lion rampant, rising out of a Baron's coronet. They were probably commissioned by Hugh Robert Hughes the younger (known as 'HRH') of Kinmel Estate, likely on the occasion of his marriage to Florentia Liddell, daughter of Henry Thomas, 2nd lord Ravensworth in 1853 (the year the skewers were made). Meat skewers of this period do not come much better than these examples, which is perhaps fitting when one considers its provenance, the prestigious firm from which it was manufactured and the quality their discerning clientele decreed. One for the collectors, a really wonderful pair. These would also now make terrific letter openers on one’s desk or bookmarks!
