Description: DETAILS: Original vintage photograph of Allen Farina Hoskins and Ernie "Sunshine Sammy" Morrison from Hal Roach's Our Gang silent short film. Circa 1922. During his time in the gang, Farina became both the series' anchor and its most popular character. While he was not the first black child actor (or even the first black Our Gang kid), Farina became arguably the first black child star. His contract with Hal Roach Studio called for $250 a week, more than any other child actor was earning at that time. He was given a lead role in most of Our Gang's silent episodes. A heavy burden on any child actor let alone an African American one during the pre-code era. Appearing next to Hoskins, is Morrison, who was the first Our Gang black child actor and who at the age of 4 became the second African American child actor to appear in motion pictures. After his tenure with Hal Roach Our Gang series, Morrison went on to a successful career as an actor in both white and negro vaudeville as well as film, dance and as a jazz band leader. Photos of the two actors appearing together without there white co-stars are exceptionally rare. Measures approx. 9 1/2" x 7" inches.
