This is a brown transfer or transferware ironstone dinner plate in a pattern called Fair Winds made by Alfred Meakin, England in the 1950s. The plate is 10.5 inches in diameter and the design is a nautical one featuring the sailing ship Friendship Of Salem with surrounding border vignettes of U.S. Delaware Capturing Le Croyable, Canton Port 1830, New York Harbor 1830 and the American Eagle. The large dinnerplate measures 10.5 inches in diameter is in very good +++ condition with no chips or cracks and only very light signs of use. So very decorative. Alfred Meakin set up the pottery manufacturing company in 1875 - he died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James who died only four years later. Alfred John's uncle Robert Johnson bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family's hands until 1976 when it became Myott-Meakin before becoming part of the Churchill Group. All photos are actual, except the first one, which is a catalog one.
