Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine (AHMM) is a monthly digest size fiction magazine specializing in crime and detective fiction. The magazine was founded in 1956 by H.S.D. Publications and Richard E. Decker, who licensed the use of Alfred Hitchcock's name. Hitchcock's introductions in the magazine were ghost written by a variety of writers, including Robert Arthur.[1] The first issue was dated December 1956 and was designated as volume 1, number 12.[2] The magazine's first editor was William Manners.[3] Though there was no formal connection with the Hitchcock television series, stories published in the magazine were sometimes adapted by the producers of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. A few writers, such as Henry Slesar, wrote for both. Other contributors during the magazine's early years included Evan Hunter (Ed McBain), Ed Lacy, Bill Pronzini, Donald E. Westlake and Charles Willeford. In 1975, the magazine was acquired by Davis Publications, Inc., and since 1992 it has been published by Dell Magazines. Eleanor Regis Sullivan was the magazine's editor from 1975 to 1981, Cathleen Jordan from 1981 to 2002, and since then it has been edited by Linda Landrigan. After Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine is the second-longest-running mystery fiction magazine. In the late 1980s, the Vancouver Arts Club began a season of hour-long stage adaptations of stories from the magazine titled "There's Just One Hitch".[4] In June 2003, the magazine's cover title changed to the Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. In 2006, the magazine celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with the publication of the anthology Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine Presents Fifty Years of Crime and Suspense.
