Growing up in a working-class Italian immigrant family, he joined the Five Points Gang as a teenager. His move to Chicago in the early 1920s marked a turning point in his criminal career. There, he became a trusted associate of Johnny Torrio, who led a powerful criminal syndicate. Bootlegging and Criminal Empire: Capone’s primary source of wealth was bootlegging—the illegal production and distribution of alcohol during Prohibition. He controlled speakeasies, breweries, and distilleries, amassing immense wealth and power. Violent clashes with rival gangs, particularly the North Side Gang, solidified his dominance. Public Image and Notoriety: Despite his criminal activities, Capone cultivated a public image as a “modern-day Robin Hood.” He provided for the poor during the Great Depression. However, the infamous Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929, where seven members of the North Side Gang were killed, tarnished his reputation.
