Description: Akron, Ohio Civil War Era CDV man with tousled hair & full beard by G.W. Manly I like the direct but kind gaze of this man. He wears a jacket with velvet lapels, and he gazes directly at the camera. His thick curly hair is cut somewhat long, and his grizzled beard is full, meeting his hair above his ears. On the reverse of card is printed:"G.W. Manly,Photographer,Akron, Ohio" George W. Manly was well-known and popular for his work in Salem, Ohio. In 1859, he opened an additional studio in Akron. During the period 1855-1859, his advertisements appeared several times in the Anti-Slavery Bugle. Card measures about 4 x 2.375 inches. Photo measures 3.5 x 2.125 inches. Portrait vignette measures about 2 x 1.5 inches. Yellowing to image. Soiling to image and card.My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able. There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process.
