Description: After Giambologna and Susini, a patinated bronze pacing horse (aka the ‘Medici horse’) French or Italian, late 19th / early 20th century. 14 ¼ high x 12 ½ wide x 6 ¾ deep including base. No observable foundry marks or signature. Mounted to an ebonized wooden base. Very good condition, minor ware to patina. The sculpture offered here is ultimately dependent on Giambologna’s (Jean de Boulogne, 1529–1608) equestrian monument of Cosimo I de’ Medici, Duke of Florence (1519–1574, not to be confused with his more illustrious ancestor and namesake Cosimo de’ Medici (1389–1464)). The sculpture was commissioned by Cosimo’s son Fernando (also the subject of an equestrian sculpture by Giambologna), and erected in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria in 1594, where it stands to this day. It was however Giambologna’s pupil Gianfrancesco Susini (1585–1653) who first sculpted and cast a freestanding horse based on his master’s model, without rider or harness or any other accoutrement: one of the finest examples from Susini’s workshop is in the princely collection of Liechtenstein, on display in Vienna (link below). In turn, Susini’s version spawned a multiplicity of castings throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The casting offered here is larger than many, with a particularly fine renaissance brown patina. https://www.liechtensteincollections.at/en/collections-online/pacing-horse
