Description: This is an older - Chokwe PWO mask - early to mid-20th century mask from the Congo. These masks were used in fertility rituals - this one likely representing a specfic mature woman. Wooden part 8.5 inches tall by 5 inches wide - headress extends to approximately 11 inches.. This mask shows wear from use - it is missing a woven collar (note holes along lower edge).. It comes from an old Richmond, Virginia, collection. Original source was respected trader Tamba Kaba purchased in 1998. Old price tag from 1990's attached.
