(Best guess by matching the design.) This African "Dan Mask" is a stunning piece of tribal folk art that is sure to add a touch of culture to any collection. The Dan African people, also known as the Gio and Yakuba tribes, are located in the West Central Mountains of Liberia. This mask is a representation of their culture and is a must-have for collectors of African art. The mask is handmade and authentic, making it a true treasure for those who appreciate African culture. DAN MASK - Natural indigenous ebony/ironwood, late early to mid-20th century. Masks are the most important art form of the Dan. Socially, masks are the means of bringing control and order to village life, as well as provide the strongest impressions of a young Dan person's earliest experience, as their importance is reinforced by their presence at all significant events. This a old Dan Mask will compliment your collection or home. The DAN PEOPLE - Dan, an ethnolinguistic grouping of people inhabiting the mountainous west-central Côte d’Ivoire and adjacent areas of Liberia. The Dan belong to the Southern branch of the Mande linguistic subgroup of the Niger-Congo language family. They originated somewhere to the west or northwest of their present lands, perhaps among the Malinke (Mandingo). The Dan are closely related to the Gere (also spelled Ngere, or Guere) to the south. The Dan and their neighbours are said to have a history of warfare. The isolation of the area probably served to accentuate myths of bellicose, “primitive” mountain people are best avoided because they could be dangerous. Christian proselytism proved difficult as well, as the Dan have preferred to maintain their own religious beliefs. CONDITION: PRE-OWNED - VINTAGE (Possible Antique.) In GOOD to VERY GOOD pre-owned condition! The TEETH show wear from age or maybe it is ARTISTIC DECAY! :) There are minor scuffs and some insignificant hard to notice small hidden cracks at the bottom.
