This watercolor with a study of a stage costume was one among others in the group of drawings and watercolours mostly executed by Russian artists. It was found in the album of Tsar Nikolai I's daughter, Grand Duchess of Russia and Queen of Wuerttemberg, Olga Nikolaevna (1822-1892). She married Karl, Crown Prince (and future King) of Wuerttemberg in 1846, settling in her Royal Residence in Stuttgart in the same year. We acquired this album at the prominent Sotheby's Sale "Ancestral Attics", held in Castle Monrepos by Ludwigsburg, Germany (October 9-14th 2000, Lot 1744). Since this particular watercolor is unsigned, we believed it for a long time to be a work of a certain Stuttgart artist active at the Stuttgart court in the mid-19th century. However, we were taken by complete surprise, when in April of 2008 discovered three watercolors in Russian archives (see our additional images) that were drawn doubtlessly by the same hand. The author was apparently of not German but Russian nationality - a well known graphic artist, also working at courts (in St. Petersburg and - as we will see below - in Stuttgart), Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne. Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne (1826 St. Petersburg - 1901 ibidem) was an offspring of a well known family of French artists that settled in St. Petersburg already in the 18th century. His father, Joseph Charlemagne, both of his uncles, Karl and Ludwig Charlemagne, his brother Iosif Iosifovich Charlemagne, as well as (later) his son, Iosif Adolfovich Charlemagne - were all either painters, graphic artists or architects. Between 1847-1855 Adolf Iosifovich was trained at St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts under F.A. Bruni and B.P. Villevalde, being repeatedly awarded various academic medals throughout his studies. In 1856-1861, a recipient of Academy's scholarship, he studied in Munich and Paris, proceeding to work for Queen Olga (sic!) at the Court of Stuttgart in 1857. In 1859 the artist received a rank of academician from his "alma mater", St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. Similarly, in 1867, he became one of its professors of historical painting. In 1873 he was appointed a Court Artist of his Majesty Tsar of Russia (then, a most honorable rank for a Russian artist!). He was also a member of various Russian artist societies, regularly exhibiting in Russia and abroad. Today, works of A.I. Charlemagne belong to permanent collections of the most esteemed museums of Russia and abroad (among others, Dresden Gallery). His drawings (his oil paintings are virtually impossible to find nowadays) achieve increasingly high prices at the international art auction market.
