Description: This is a letter signed by Robert L. Dennison. Admiral Robert Lee Dennison (1901-1980) was an American naval officer, and an aide to President Harry S. Truman. Dennison held numerous commands in the United States Navy, including submarines, destroyers, and the USS Missouri (BB-63). Truman twice sailed on the Missouri while Dennison commanded it. He was a naval aide to Harry Truman from 1948 to 1953. Dennison was the Commander in Chief of the United States Atlantic Fleet, and United States Atlantic Command from February 28, 1960 to April 30, 1963. While in charge of the Atlantic forces, he was given the duty of blockading Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The letter is typed on the stationery ofthe "Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic". It is dated September 3, 1960, and is signed in ink by Admiral Dennison. The letter is addressed to George Fielding Eliot (1894-1971), a Second Lieutenant in the Australian army in World War I. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and later a Major in the Military Intelligence Reserve of the U.S. Army. He was the author of 15 books on military and political matters in the 1930s through the 1960s, wrote a syndicated column on military affairs and was the military analyst on radio and on television for CBS News during World War II.
